THE BURNS SISTERS – LOOKING BACK / OUR AMERICAN IRISH SOULS

THE BURNS SISTERS - LOOKING BACK / IRISH AMERICAN OUR SOULS

American John J. Burns had Irish roots and was invited in that capacity to lead the election campaign of presidential candidate Robert "Bobby" Kennedy along smoothly. Who could have suspected at the time that not he but his daughters were going to achieve a much more famous status.

However, this is the case for Annie and Marie Burns together under the name 'The Burns Sisters' make furore in the world of alternative folk music. The two sisters from Ithaca, New York began their musical career in 1986, when even if the quintet 'The Burns Sisters Band "with three other sisters Jeannie, Sheila and Terry and until 2013 as a trio with sister Jeannie Burns.

For five years the sisters have shared the stage with Arlo Guthrie, son of the legendary Woody, still one of the greatest in the folk genre. Also, Tom Paxton, Pete Seeger, Jimmy LaFave Janis Ian and appealed to their perfect blend income 'vocals' harmony voices.

They have since released ten albums including "Looking Back / Our American Irish Souls" has become the latest exponent. On this new album they have twelve songs collected five self-composed songs, some cover versions and a few carefully crafted traditionals.

Of the songs we especially remember opener "Mother's Ode", the beautiful "Workhouse", "Father's Blue Eyes" and "Far From My Home". Drummer and percussionist Daryl Burgess wrote the wonderful love song "I Would", one of the absolute highlights on this album.

When retreaded songs on this CD, we want to draw any attention to Ralph McTell's song "Clare To Here" from his album "Right Side Up" from 1976, "Free-Born Man" by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger in 1983 and about a 19th century Irish immigrant acting song "Kilkelly (Ireland)" Steven and Peter Jones.

The most famous Irish traditionals are "Ned Of The Hill" (aka the Gaelic ballad "Éamonn an Chnoic"), the countless times retreads "Oh, Danny Boy" and in 1913 by James Royce Shannon for the musical 'Shameen Dhu' written Irish -American song "Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral"

The inspiration for these songs did Annie and Marie Burns during a long tour and festival appearances throughout Ireland where they could go in search of their deepest roots and family history marked by famine and the resulting migration to America.

"Looking Back / Our American Irish Souls" is an absolutely wonderful folk album with songs sung excellent and crystal clear by the two sisters Burns. It is therefore a genuine recommendation to purchase for fans of this type of high-quality music.
